Our Primary Petition

by Paula Santacruz

"Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

~ Psalm 37:4

Our Father knows the desires and dreams of our hearts. He always wants the best for us. When we desire something with all our hearts, we seek God’s presence and we let him know our petitions, God with his unfailing and everlasting love will make our prayers come true.

Sometimes we think God is taking too long to answer or that He does not hear us when we pray. However, we keep asking and seeking Him to see that He will give us the desires of our hearts. As time passes, we notice that as our faith in God grows, our personal communion with him is getting stronger and constant.

Finally, we see God has answered our prayers, He gave us our desires and the dreams of our hearts. This makes us feel glad and thankful, not only because He did it, but also, once again, showed His love and power to us. We are so grateful! Our heart is filled with gratitude as we receive the job we were asking for, the person we were waiting for, or a solution to the challenge in front of us. God Himself has shown us His power, faithfulness, and love by answering our prayers. We are delighting ourselves in the Lord’s presence!

As time goes by, life takes over. Sometimes we tend to forget God because we are too busy, tired, and stressed. Our personal time with the Lord becomes superficial.

Sadly, we fall into the trap of seeking God for only what he gives us; for what we want to receive. Jesus expressed in John 6:26:

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

Are you seeking God just because of the "loaves", perhaps because of work, study, marriage, travels, or dreams? Or because of who He is in your life? We should not only delight in the Lord as we look to have our prayers answered. Our delight and principal petition must be to seek His face, presence, and love constantly. Abide in Christ by making him your priority, having personal time every day with Him; enjoying His presence.

Jimmy Chamorro mentions: From the Lord Jesus we learn the real meaning of setting aside a time to be with his Father. Jesus desired to always be with God in prayer, every early morning He did it. It was an essential moment to Him(1). Jesus did not take for granted being God’s only son and the accompanying fame. His primary desire was being in communion with his father, so he maintained special, dedicated time for God.

Once God has answered what we prayed for, we still have a huge reason to abide in Christ by seeking His face in prayer and worship. It does not matter how busy we are; He must be our priority.

I set aside a time to be alone with my Father, deciding to detach myself from the things that distract me and move me away from him (2).

Enjoy His presence. Delight in the Lord because He is your father and your first love. God has already done wonders in your life – His love is in you – and everything else comes second (Matthew 6:33).

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

I invite you to preserve a special moment every morning, every day, for your Father. Give your heart to the Lord and he will help you to prioritise your communion with Him above all else.

‘’My delight is loving you Father always.’’
