Summary: Five Pillars of Biblical Success

By Bridgette

The book is available free online.

  • There are two definitions of success:

    • God defined and man defined. This is the crux of the meaning of life question.

      • These can be summed up in two phrases: "More for me in eternity" vs. "More for me in history."

      • You can also think of Joshua 1:7-8, Matthew 5:1-12, Matthew 6:33, and Deuteronomy 8:17-18, Matthew 6:19-21, Matthew 25:21, Matthew 6:24-26, Jeremiah 11:8

  • The basis of individual success is covenant-keeping, first with God and then with man.

    • Think about it: Every relationship is based on a written or unspoken contract, covenant, or agreement. This is the way God has ordered the world.

      • What areas of responsibilities has God entrusted to you in every relationship?

      • Success is essentially, building up, rather than tearing down - the reverse of contributing to brokenness. Proverbs 14:1.

      • In every relationship there exists these five questions: who's in charge? To whom do I report? What are the rules? What happens if I obey/disobey? Does this relationship have a future? Another way to think of the questions is this acronym: THEOS - transcendence, hierarchy, ethics, oath, succession. See Luke 12:47-48.

      • Examples of success indicators: Deu. 28:1-14, Deu. 28:15-68, but remember success indicators are not the same as success. Success is a relationship with the one true God.

  • The myth of the would-be autonomous man. Success is always mutual. More than one person contributes to it. Ultimate success is to have your name listed in the Book of Life, by God's amazing grace.

    • Eph. 2:8-10, 1 Cor. 3:11-15. Mark 10:42-45, Luke 10:20, Rev. 20:12-13, Isaiah 55:6-7, Ph. 2:5-11, Mark 10:42-45, Romans 9:15-16, Deu. 28:1-3.

    • Read about successes disguised as losers in the time they lived in Hebrews 11.
